RAMADAN FROM A REFUGEE PERSPECTIVE

Imagen
EID MUBARAK! HAPPY RAMADAN! Ramadan is a very important  period in the life of a Muslim.  It is considered one of the holiest Islamic months.  It's also one of the  Five Pillars of Islam, t hese are five principles which Muslims believe are compulsory acts ordered by God.  The most visible and well-known part of Ramadan is that they cannot eat or drink or have sex from sunrise to sunset. But Ramadan is much more than fasting. It is a time of purification, prayer and meditation, it is a time in which the population lives in a different way, interacts in a different way and faces a penance that is sometimes hard to fulfill. However, this Ramadan is different from any other. Across the Muslim world, these perplexing times have been made worse by the severe economic impact of the pandemic. Furthermore, the constant wars in conflict-dominated countries that cause millions of Muslims to be displaced from their homes has compounded the suffering of this culture. Their ...

WHO TELLS THE TRUTH?

With the social and economic situation that the Colombian government is experiencing in these times, we have seen how social networks have become the # 1 channel of information in the young and adult population. Videos, images and audios of acts of violence have been disseminated through all accounts and social networks. I was discussing the other day with my father about a video that I watched and I gave him my opinion, to which he replied that it was not what happened that in everything had started for another reason and he showed me a video of which I did not know existed and it was the same video that I saw although it showed more content and the other part of the story, so it helped me to reestructure my perspective on the story. However, a few days later we saw in an Instagram post the "true" version of what had happened and they attached a video that was even much longer than the one my dad had seen and gave us a bigger panorama of the situation and completely changed ...

BIOSECURITY WITHOUT CLEAN WATER

I was with my little cousin watching a documentary called "The end of poverty?" which talks about global poverty and how it isn't something new and it explained how poverty has accumulated over the centuries affecting human history. Of course, my little cousin didn't magnify the figures and scientific studies, however, she perfectly understood the images and the situation in which the people in the documentary found themselves.  I asked her to wash her hands to comply with these new habits and biosecurity measures that we are acquiring and she asked me: "do they wash their hands?" And I said doubting  "No" , to what she asked "and why?", then I said to her: "because they are not fortunate enough to have clean water like us" , to which she replied: "so how they fight against the coronavirus bug?"  And that question left me wondering, what is biosafety like in societies where there is no type of health security? how ar...

THERE IS NO PLANET B

In my family we have always been thrifty people and we usually buy only what is necessary, however, since the quarantine ended and we started going out little by little, I think we have bought more than 40 face masks to vary their color, texture, size, among other insignificant things. And now that I see the accumulation of face masks, I think about where they'll end up in about three years. It is true that, thanks to the isolation and industrial paralysis in the world, we have reduced pollution levels in a large proportion and as the SDG's indicates, during the pandemic the greenhouse gas emissions dropped in a 6% which is a big advance when the main goal was 7,6%. Also, while humans were at home, videos and images of animals walking through streets and urban areas that used to be crowded by people were viral on social media. While this suggests in a positive link between nature and the Covid-19 pandemic, the reality is much more sinister. Today by following biosec...

WHAT THE VACCINE WON'T FIX

THE FUTURE OF AN ENTIRE GENERATION IS AT RISK   It was initially said that Covid-19 affected older adults in greater proportion and that they should be the most protected in society. However, it was late to realize that the children were the most harmed by the pandemic in terms of mental health. On the one hand, quarantine forced thousands of people around the world to remain locked in their homes, which caused among many things, an increase in domestic violence by up to 60% in most Latin American countries according to the Europe director for the WHO. It is important to note that regions with medium and low economic resources are the focus of this type of violence. Factors such as unemployment, health and food are just the tip of the iceberg that hides a whole picture of violence where the victims are women and children who tend to grow up with trauma and psychological consequences in the medium and long term. Another aspect that affects children's mental heal...
